The Service We Provide

What We Do

Although the majority of our clients are in their later years, we do not restrict ourselves to that age group.

We offer transport to everyone who cannot use or doesn’t have access to Public Transport.

Currently due to driver shortage, we only take clients to medical appointments (hospitals, doctor, dental, optician).

Our drivers use their own cars and expect to wait for up to two hours and then take you home.

Limitations

We need as much notice as possible to find you a driver.

We do our best, but we cannot guarantee to find a driver. The person being carried must live in the SP8 postal area.

Because our drivers use their own cars, you must be able to get in and out of a normal family car. We cannot carry you in your wheelchair or carry your own personal wheelchair.

The driver’s responsibility ends when you reach your destination. If you need help at the other end you should take someone with you.

All children must be accompanied by an adult.

FAQ's

Who can use Gillingham Car Link?

Anyone who lives in postcode area SP8, ie Gillingham, Dorset and the surrounding villages.  We are here to drive you to your medical appointments if you need transport.  Note: we cannot accept clients who live in postcode SP7.

What do you do exactly?

Our volunteer drivers use their own cars to take clients to their medical appointments.  They will collect you from your home, take you to your appointment, wait for you and bring you back home.

What counts as a medical appointment?

Any appointment with staff at GP surgeries, hospitals be they doctors, nurses, health assistants, etc.  We also take clients to physiotherapists, osteopaths, acupuncturists, opticians, hearing clinics, podiatrists.    If you are not sure, ask the coordinator.

How far do you go?

We go as far as Southampton/Bristol/Taunton.

Can I come with someone?

Yes, many clients travel with a partner or friend.  If you are likely to need help at the appointment, please come with a companion to help you.  Our drivers are drivers not carers.

Do I have to pay?

We are a charity so there are no fixed tariffs.  We do ask for a donation however, and we have suggestions for the different distances.  We do not make any profit but we do need to cover the driver’s mileage expenses.  However, our suggestions are suggestions, it is up to you how much you donate.

How do I donate?

Your driver will give you an official envelope when you return, please put your donation in there, seal it and return it to the driver.  Don’t worry, he will receive his mileage expenses no matter what you donate.   We accept cash, cheques and payment by BACS.  We do not accept credit cards.

What about walking aids?

We are happy to take collapsible rollators which will fit in the average car.   If you are unsure about your walking ability it is best to come with a companion who can help you get a wheelchair at the hospital if necessary.  We do not take wheelchairs.

Do I have to pay for parking?

No, usually our drivers can park for free.  If there is a charge the Car Link will pay.

How do I get a driver?

You contact the Car Link to register as a client, then when you have an appointment ring the Car Link phone number and leave a message for the coordinator.  They will find a driver for you, call you back and tell you the driver’s name and the time he will arrive.

How much notice should I give?

As much as possible.  Ring as soon as you receive your appointment.  Please note we cannot take same day requests, and can rarely help with next day requests.  We are not an emergency car service.

Can I book a journey through the website?

No, you cannot.  The only way to request a driver is to leave a message on our answerphone 07599 311443.   We prefer a voice message but if that is not possible please send a text message.

How long do I have to wait for a reply?

You will normally hear back from the coordinator within 24 hours.  If your appointment is some time away they may take 48 hours.  Please don’t contact them again, they will return your call.
